A Day of Family Fun in Colwood

Family Day is the perfect time to take a step back from busy everyday life and focus on making memories with the ones you love most. Originally established by the Province of Alberta in 1990, British Columbia did not officially celebrate the holiday until 2013. If you live in Colwood B.C., you’ve got 23 years of lost time off to make up for, so make the most of it! Here’s our suggestion for a full action-packed Family Day experience on the WestShore:

Lunch: Bin 4 Burger Lounge WestShore

You can never go wrong by supporting a local Victoria business-turned-local-icon. With just a short time window until the next Family Day activity, and hungry mouths of all ages to feed, elevated burgers and fries are usually a good bet! This month, try their special February Feature sandwich “The Breadwinner” (pictured). Nothing quite like family bonding over delicious food! Bin 4 WestShore is located at 716 Goldstream Avenue.

1PM-3PM: Family Day at West Shore Recreation Centre

Now that you’ve fueled up, it’s time to burn off those burger calories! On Family Day, family swimming and skating is free at West Shore Rec. Centre. After taking a few speedy laps around the freshly-zambonied ice, relax in the large hot tub that overlooks the Juan de Fuca Golf Course while the kids splash around the adventure pool, the giant water slide, and the not-so-Lazy River. A refreshing way to continue your time spent together!

3:30PM-4:30PM: Colwood Firefighters Historical Museum

After skating, sliding, swimming, and splashing for a few hours, everyone will be ready for a slower-paced activity. Normally only available to see by special appointment, the hidden Colwood treasure that is the Colwood Firefighters Historical Museum is open to the public especially for Family Day from 8:30am to 4:30pm. With interesting tidbits of West Shore history from as far back as 1939, and vintage fire trucks for the young ones to see, this is the perfect activity for all to join in on an informative, fun, and lower-key afternoon. 5PM-6PM: Ocean Sunset

After all that local learning, head back to Royal Beach to wrap up the day with a stunning view you can get nowhere else. This is the perfect time to reflect on how grateful you are to be together with your family on beautiful Vancouver Island.
