The Commons neighbourhood is one step closer
Gablecraft has applied to the City of Colwood for a Development Permit for the Commons Village Centre, with ground-breaking expected in late Spring 2021.
The Commons will be a mixed-use neighbourhood at the heart of the Royal Bay community. It will include a retail village, a grocery store, cold beer and wine store, coffee shop, restaurant and pharmacy, as well as the Royal BC Museum collections building.
Architecturally significant museum building
Royal BC Museum has completed the purchase of their eight-acre site, and they are preparing for a design competition to design an architecturally significant building. The approximately 14,000 square-metre facility will use mass timber construction and meet CleanBC energy efficiency standards.
The proposed facility will house the Royal BC Museum’s archives, collections and research department. It will improve research activities by providing dedicated research labs and learning spaces. It will also improve access to the museum’s vast collections. The new building will offer learning opportunities for students, both in person and online.
Ryder Hesjedal Way will soon be extended to connect to the new museum site at Metchosin Road. Work is expected to start in the Spring 2021 and wrap up in early 2022.
Painter Road Trail will be re-aligned temporarily again this winter to make way for the permanent extension of the multi-use walking and cycling trail as Ryder Hesjedal Way is extended to the Painter Road Trail switchback.
Upcoming road work
You may have noticed some utility markings on the sidewalk along Latoria Road, as we plan minor work at the junction of old Latoria Road and Latoria Boulevard as well as on Metchosin Road south of the Latoria Boulevard intersection in March 2021. No major interruptions expected.
Streetscape improvements on Metchosin Road
Road work to extend the walking and cycling connections and improve streetlighting on the west side of Metchosin Road will proceed in Spring 2021. Work will extend all the way south to the City gravel storage yard near the Metchosin border.
